Before JanGehl, before ChanTyce, I wanted to marry Moby. It’s unclear when or how this started, but I do know that it had little to do with his music. Before blogging was blogging he had an online journal type situation on his website and when I was in college I would read his journal and laugh out loud. At the peak of our engagement I was living in Manhattan during a semester of college when he posted an invite to his DVD release event at the SoHo Apple Store. My roommate insisted on coming, which I figured was fine as long as she did not get in the way of our love, and so I went and stood outside the SoHo Apple Store and sat down on the second floor bleachers and watched a preview of his DVD, a collection of short videos and music videos. Then a SoHo employee walked around with a box of DVDs and I bought one for $10 then stood in line for him to sign it, during which I tried to figure out what to say when we met, How are you? Do you have a girlfriend? When do you want to set the date? How do you feel about putting disposable cameras on all the tables so our guests can take silly photos? It didn’t take long for my anxiety to prompt a brief, albeit intense, panic attack so that when it was my turn to see him and he asked, Do you have any questions and I shook my head because I could not catch my breath and then I whisper-shouted at myself pull it together it is now or never and so I said, Who makes the cartoons for your music videos?  And he said, My friend Alice, aren’t they great?  Yes, I replied, they are great. My roommate then said, Cheese! And I turned around and smiled and Moby looked up and smiled and she took our photo.  He wrote, To Alex, Moby, on the inside cover of my DVD.I ended up breaking off the engagement soon after because a life full of SoHo apple stores and panic attacks sounded like the opposite of happily ever after. Still, you can imagine that stumbling across an article about him making breakfast can bring back heart pangs, even years after our tumultuous courtship.  Love is hard.

“Hmmm your feelings are taking up too much space on the server. Is there anything you can remove that you’re not using? I don’t want to make you take off stuff that’s posted, but moving forward we’ll have to find another upload space where you can put sad songs and photos of McDonald’s foods.” – ChanTyce

I think one of the hardest parts about being in graduate school is when I have no energy. Because I am so happy to be here, but when I have no energy I no longer have the motivation that got me here in the first place, and suddenly I find myself going through the motions of reading and writing and then not retaining any of it. It’s like grad school is a cup of boiling hot water and you are on a rollercoaster of emotions and you just paid $120,000 to keep it from spilling. And at first you’re like duh this is easy I can take this but after a sharp turn it spills and you’re like ouch wtf and then it happens again and again you’re like ouch ouch ouch and you lose your focus and get frustrated and then half way through you’re like who gave me this cup of hot boiling water anyway? and then the person next to you is like duh you asked for it and you’re like right, i love this cup of hot boiling water, but this ride is making me naseous.  Follow me?  How do I get everything done for tomorrow, I asked Pete-the-Gradute-Study-Center-Guru and he said, sometimes you just don’t.

Last night I took Peter as my date to the PennDesign Beaux Arts Ball 2010: Carnevale di Venezia.  The DJ played rave techno the whole time which was confusing but Peter danced at 250% and now has blisters.  Success?
